BEHIND THE GOGGLES: MEET VICTORIA, JENNY, ABRA AND MEL
Seattle, WA: It is Ladies Week at evo! We are going Behind the Goggles and introducing you to a couple of our amazing and friendly ladies that work here at evo. Come and find out more about Jenny, Abra, Mel & Victoria.
By Carly Crabb: The evo family is a steadfast bunch, passionate about both the products we sell and the experiences of action sports. Much like how evo strives to tie culture and sport, our crew are synonymous with a work hard-play hard mentality. Unwavering in creativity, dedication, and good ol’ fun, our stories are all different. But in the end, we each share a passion for building and being a part of something greater than ourselves. We chose the name “Behind the Goggles” to give our employees an opportunity to share their story and to give readers a chance to hear the inner voice of evo.
At the end of October we opened our new flagship retail store in the Wallingford/Fremont neighborhood, just about a mile east of our original roots here in Seattle. With an entire mezzanine filled with ski and snowboard hardgoods, a floor of men’s technical apparel and clothing, a lower level dedicated to all women’s apparel, shoes and accessories, a bustling service and repair shop, and an art gallery…it’s a big place to run!
These lovely ladies are a few of the team who are an integral part of this incredible space and help keep the ship sailing smoothly day after day. Without further adieu, meet Jenny, Abra, Melanie, and Victoria.
-What do you do at evo?
I work in the ski department, slangin’ planks and fitting boots. Sometimes I sneak over to chat snowboards as well.
-What is your favorite ski or snowboard?
I love the Line Soulmate. It’s so versatile and it rips! The Soulmate replaced the beloved Celebrity 100, but it was a nice improvement.
-What is your favorite snow accessory?
My Dakine balaclava. Sunny days, stormy days, I never ski without it. These freckles need maximum protection.
-Dream trip?
Japan! Quick stop in Kyoto to visit my stepmom, then I’d head North to Hokkaido.
-What are your favorite summer activities?
Hands down, hiking is my favorite Summer activity. These WA forests are lush and seemingly endless. Camping is also high on the list; sleeping in the woods is good for the soul.
-Past jobs?
I came to evo after two years at a shred shop in Lake Tahoe. Before that, I spent my summers as the demo manager at Windells Camp at Mt Hood.
-What’s on your feet?
Stefan Janoski everyday. Dalbello Krypton Kryzma or Burton Sapphire on the hill.
-Interesting Tidbit?
I love purple.
Abra Buffalo
-What do you do at evo?
I have actually been asking myself this very question. I work in the store and I guess I do a little bit of everything. Recently, I have been spending a little more time in will call/tune shop. I like it there.
-What is your favorite ski or snowboard?
I am in the middle of a switching from snowboarding to skiing. I am definitely still learning what I love and don’t love when it comes to skis. Right now? K2 MissBehaved. It’s the perfect ski for ME.
-What is your favorite snow accessory?
My helmet, bumpin’ beats. I love it.
-Dream trip?
Kazakhstan (no Borat references, please)… Most people ask me why. I simply tell them, “Because apples and tulips come from Kazakhstan”. If you want to know more, please feel free to ask, it might surprise you.
-What are your favorite summer activities?
Boats. I love being on boats. I spent all summer working on boats here in the city.
-Past jobs?
Renting mopeds, Retail, Restaurant, Customer Care at evo.
-What’s on your feet?
Socks that look like Chuck Taylors, except they’re not. I like socks, especially tall socks.
-Interesting Tidbit?
I am a pretty good dancer and my front three teeth are porcelain crowns.
Melanie Silwick
-What do you do at evo?
I’m a snowboard sales associate at the store.
-What is your favorite ski or snowboard?
Right now it’s the 151 Lib Tech TRS Narrow… until I try the Gnu B-Pro Split!
-What is your favorite snow accessory?
As a matter of fact, my goggles. Vision is pretty crucial for scouting lines and avoiding obstacles. Next would be my transceiver. Maybe I even like my transceiver a little more sometimes.
-Dream trip?
Around the world hitting surf spots (and actually being able to surf them), shredding mountains, camping, hiking, biking, skating, boating, swimming, fresh air-ing, eating, drinking, getting pictures, looking at art & making new friends along the way, with someone I love for a couple of months… years… you said DREAM trip right?
-What are you favorite summer activities?
Riding bikes, being out in the sun as much as possible, camping, being in/around water, wakeboarding, attempting to surf & skate – nothing but room to progress there. This summer I ended up doing a lot of work and school.
-Past Jobs?
Massage therapist, waitress, sports camp counselor.
-What’s on your feet?
Purple nail polish, some miles, and a pair of black skate shoes.
-Interesting Tidbit?
People who laugh more are better able to tolerate pain, both physical and emotional – according to someone who post fun facts on the internet, but makes sense.
Victoria Frederick
-What do you do at evo?
I stoke people out on all the cool gear evo has to offer! And I get to meet some pretty neat people, too.
-What is your favorite ski or snowboard?
I can’t say I have a true favorite, but I’ll be riding the Ladies Choice Gnu this season.
-What’s your favorite snow accessory?
Good friends and funny jokes.
-Dream trip?
Too many to list, but I’ve heard Thailand is a pretty rad place. I wouldn’t mind biking around some Italian countryside, either.
-Favorite summer activities?
Soccer, beach volleyball, wakeboarding, aaaand pretty much anything outdoors/competitive!
-Past jobs?
A lot of soccer. I got to play for the women’s Sounders this past summer along with a team out of the Bay area.
-What’s on your feet?
I currently have on some grey leather classic lace up vans…untied laces ALWAYS.
-Interesting Tidbit?
I’m from Alabama? I won second place in the grey m&m contest about ten years ago and got a years supply of m&m product…
